Ian and Sarah welcome you to The Old Borough Arms Guest House

The Old Borough Arms Hotel is situated at the foot of the famous Mermaid Street where the cobbled streets of Rye begin to wind up to the Church of St. Mary. A flower-decked patio overlooks the bustling Strand, full of interesting shops - from stylish antique centres to old curiosity shops brimming with "bargains". The River Tillingham passes nearby with pretty riverside walks to the fishing quarter, where the local catch can be bought. The town centre is only a few minutes stroll away.

There has been a hotel or inn on the site since the fifteenth century. There is a long list of previous owners right back to 1455 when a Mr. John Hammond and his wife Agnes rented the hotel from a Stephen Marchant for the princely sum of 2 shillings per annum.stone wall Parts of the bar area date back to this fifteenth century period although a re-build in 1720 transformed most of the hotel into what you see today, which is a 300-year old former smugglers' inn. It is built on the original Rye Town Wall which was constructed in the 14th century to protect the town from French Invaders. There is not much of the original wall remaining in Rye, but a large section of it is exposed within the hotel itself. The hotel is built on the site of the Strand Gate - one of the main entrances into Rye. Although this gate has long disappeared, the "Borough Arms" which were above the Strand gate are now set into the outside wall of the hotel. The Building is much photographed and is featured on many postcards on sale in the town. It was also used for the film "Yellow Beard".

Underneath the Old Borough Arms, we also have the 'Mermaid Corner' Tea Rooms, recently featured in Sussex Life! Residents of the hotel receive a 20% discount on all the lovely Cakes and Cream teas and many more delicious options we have on offer.
